Good spellings are the fundamental part of a child’s development but teaching little kids to spell is one of the toughest jobs ever. And kids could not be blames because teaching spellings in the English language could be quite a cumbersome work for the teacher as well. What comes to the aid in such situations is “phonics method”. As phonics uses a system that teaches children how to sound out words for reading, this system can be used to teach children how to spell. It is essential for the kids to know how to read before we jump to teaching them how to write.
Teaching kids below five years of age to spell is a frustrating job both for the teacher and the student. It is recommended that kids so small should first be taught to read properly. Beginning with alphabets is the logical step. Kids should be made familiar with all the alphabets of the English language and the probable sound of each one. Kids learn better when they could connect figures to sounds. By the age of 3 to 4 kids start identifying forms of alphabets and in some more time they start associating sounds with them. Making them able to read well is a good idea at this stage.
Once kids get a little comfortable with the reading, writing spellings will become an easier task. Remember, even adults get confused while spelling. Be patient with the child and give her as much time as she seems fit. There is also the problem of similar sounding words. A big part of learning for kids depends on their hearing. Kids write the words according to how they hear the word and how does it feel in their mouth. There are many words in the English language which sound the same or probably even spell similar but have completely different meanings.
Talk to your child about the phonics system and how words are sounded out. Phonics has helped millions of children learn to read and spell, using the sound of each letter to discover the spelling of the word as a whole. B /b/, A /a/, L /l/, L /l/, BALL. Making learning fun for kids can make your job a lot easier. For doing so you might want to use magnet alphabets and a magnet board. You might invent games for your kids or you might ask them to spell words with the colorful alphabets. Using flash cards is another attractive idea for the kids. Practice is important but along with it is also important that the child does not get exhausted.
The next step should be teaching the children the meaning of words they are about to learn to spell. Try and give examples of new words by using them in your regular sentences in correct syntax. Children are better able to remember the spelling of a word if they remember how it is used and what does it mean. Talking to the child about words and telling them how they are spelled is important if you want them to learn to spell. If a child sees that the new words that he is learning can be used to communicate in a better way, he will get motivated to learn more.
