It is not just kids, but even adults can’t spell correctly at times. Although most of the words in the English language are spelt the same way they are pronounced, there are a number of words that are not spelt the way they are pronounced.
Think of the images before the rules
Although there are a number of spelling rules in the English language, our brains are not wired to master the spelling of English words through rules. Since we tend to remember images better than rules, try to write down difficult words on flashcards so that you take a mental picture of the word.
Look at the words, hear them and say them
As the saying goes, ‘practice makes perfect’, you can excel at spelling by practising difficult words several times. Look at the difficult words and hear them, to understand how they are pronounced. Then, repeat the words several times so that the spelling of the words gets ingrained in your mind.
What is your weakness?
Understand what your weakness is by reflecting upon the words that throw you off-guard. Many people have problems spelling words with the following letters, ‘e’ and ‘i’, if they are next to each other. Some of the words include:
Kids and even adults have problems trying to understand if the letter ‘e’ should come before the letter ‘i’, or if it is the other way around. If you have a similar problem, which is faced by many, then keep in mind when you spell such words. Try to use these words frequently so that you master their spelling. By using these words frequently in your essays or emails, you can get the hang of the English language and these tricky words.
Organize words so that they have relevant associations
Our minds are not designed to remember disorganized words. So, what can you do if come across disorganized words that you need to remember? The answer is simple: organize those words. Group similar words together so that it is easy for you to remember. Some words with the suffix – ose, may easily be confused with words with suffix – ous, since their pronunciation is similar. In this case, you can group the words that end with ‘ous’ together and form links between the words so that you can never forget their spelling. Do it the same way for words ending with ‘ose’ too.
Why do some people ace the spelling bees? That’s because they practice and conduct tests on themselves. Similarly, test yourself from time to time to see your progress. Every day try to learn the spelling of ten words and then test yourself the next day to see if you remember them correctly. If you are unable to spell the words right, you know where you have gone wrong. This way, you will be aware as to the specific words to focus to improve your English language. The English language is not as hard as what it seems. It is all about practice.
A riddle that is yet to be solved is about how little kids learn to spell better. Psychologists once believed that little children use visual memory to learn the letters of a spelling like the beads of a necklace. Now, they have gone on to discover that the process is much more complex than that. A child learns to spell in a series of steps that follow in a chronological order. First of all the child should be made familiar with the spoken and written word structure. This is the basic step of learning to spell. Visual or “orthographic” memory is the most essential aspect of learning to spell.
